The objectives of MeteoSwiss are to develop new products for real-time hydrological applications and to evaluate the potential use of dual-polarisation technology in a mountainous region.
The task is threefold:
First, to develop and implement radar products based on data from the new French weather radar in the Jura mountains for hydrological use by the authorities of the Cantons.
Second, to compare radar precipitation estimates from single- versus dual-polarisation measurements in flat terrain.
And, third, to use raw dual-polarisation measurements from flat terrain and simulate the influence of mountains in order to investigate the potential use of polarisation diversity in Switzerland.
The location of the new French radar in Montancy only few kilometers from the Swiss border.
